Stage 18: Kit List (Plus What They Don’t Tell You)

Create a note on your phone and add to it during the training phase.

Little details will become apparent and you will identify a need for things you never thought you’d need and will discard things you previously thought were indispensable.

Garmin. There. I said it. Do. Not. Forget. Your. Garmin.

Chamois cream x 1 full pot and as thick as possible. Depending where you do it and what time of year, there could be a lot of sweat and it will get very hot down there, so plan accordingly.

Numerous bib shorts – no seams,

Ditto saddle: no stitching, no ridges

Take a 32: if you never use it great, it’s there if you do

Stick a compact on

Battery packs for everything and make sure they’re charged prior to beginning the attempt

Lights

Spare cleats, spare wheels, spare shoes, entire change of kit

Sun screen

Hats (yes plural: your favourite hat that works perfectly for a 3 hour ride suddenly becomes tight/loose as you sweat your way through a 20 hour grind-fest)

Sunnies/clear/orange lenses

Bidons

Toilet paper

Ipod and speaker

Esky – put 2 bidons in the esky on ice and one on your bike and rotate them out. Chances are you will only need one per ascent and saving 500g per ascent is a very good idea.
